Nonprofit Social Media and Newsletter Ideas for February 2023

Looking for ideas on what to write about in February? Then keep reading! We have ideas you can use for newsletter articles, social media updates, blog posts and more. These ideas come from our Monthly Nonprofit Writing Prompts email newsletter. Fill out the form below to get March’s prompts emailed to you this Friday.

On the Calendar

2/2: Groundhog Day. What gauge does your nonprofit use to determine whether “Spring” — or some other good news — is just around the corner? Is there an event or situation that just keeps happening over and over and over (a la the Groundhog Day movie)?

2/2: Optimist Day. Save the doom and gloom news for another day. Share what you are most looking forward to and help others see the bright side.

2/11: Make a Friend Day. Ask your supporters to refer a friend to your cause.

2/14: Valentine’s Day. Send a “love letter” to your supporters.

2/17: Random Acts of Kindness Day. Catch volunteers in the act of doing something good with photos. Or ask your supporters to share good deeds they see on Instagram, Twitter, etc with a specific hashtag or post to you Facebook Page.

2/20: Love Your Pet Day. Have staff share pictures of their pets or have your followers post theirs. Take one of those “what kind of dog breed/animal/pet are you” type quizzes and share the results.

2/20: President’s Day (U.S.). Profile a President who was a champion of your cause. If Washington or Lincoln were alive today, what would they think about your cause or the country in general?

2/26: Tell a Fairy Tale Day. Make your supporters the hero of a story. Tell the tale of the reluctant hero who steps up to battle a mighty foe.

Other Dates in February:

  • 02/01: No Politics Day
  • 02/04: World Cancer Day
  • 02/08: Boy Scout Day
  • 02/15: Susan B. Anthony Day
  • 02/17: World Human Spirit Day
  • 02/20: World Day of Social Justice
  • 02/22: World Thinking Day
  • 02/27: World NGO Day

February is also:

  • Black History Month
  • American Heart Month
  • LGBT History Month (UK)
  • Eating Disorder Awareness Month
  • National Library Lover’s Month
  • North American Inclusion Month
  • Spay/Neuter Awareness Month
  • Boost Your Self Esteem Month

Metaphor of the Month

This month’s metaphor is Relationships and Romance. Think about love affairs, breakups, dating apps, courtship, flirting, first dates, marriage, weddings, anniversaries, gifts, heartache, and honeymoons.

How can you relate these things to your organization?

Pop Culture, Events, and News

Tax preparations are beginning in the US.

The 65th Grammy Awards are the 5th.

Super Bowl Sunday is the 12th. The game is scheduled to take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Halftime will feature Rihanna.

Or if football isn’t your thing, you have the Puppy and Kitten Bowls.

Mardis Gras is the 21st.

The NAACP Image Awards are the 25th.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are the 26th.

TV in February has Harlem, The Flash, A Million Little Things, You, Star Trek: Picard, Carnival Row, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Idol, Magnum PI, The Equalizer, Snowfall, Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy, The Consultant, Party Down, and The Blacklist.

Movies being released either in theaters or streaming include 80 for Brady, Knock at the Cabin, The Amazing Maurice, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Your Place Or Mine, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Cocaine Bear.

Source of the Month

Create a “Cut From” folder. Ever write something you really love, only to realize that it really doesn’t belong in that article or blog post and has to be cut out? Don’t delete it! Put it in a separate “cut from” folder, as in “Cut From Blog Post on Bill 452.” When you are stuck for ideas, look through these files for inspiration.
