Notable Events of the Week:

  • “Donald J. Trump was indicted in Manhattan on Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star, according to five people with knowledge of the matter, a historic development that will shake up the 2024 presidential race and forever mark him as the nation’s first former president to face criminal charges.” NY Times
  • “After a shooter killed three children and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville, on Monday, lawmakers on Capitol Hill indicated there was little support for addressing gun violence through legislation.” Washington Post
  • “Civil unrest broke out in parts of Israel Sunday night after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his defense minister for criticizing the government’s divisive judicial overhaul, prompting protesters to surge into the streets, universities to shut their doors, and union leaders to hint of a looming general strike.” NY Times

Top 10 Nonprofit Tweets:

Equity and Justice:

Child labor laws are under attack in states across the country (Jennifer Sherer and Nina Mast, Economic Policy Institute)

At a time when serious child labor violations are on the rise in hazardous meatpacking and manufacturing jobs, several state legislatures are weakening—or threatening to weaken—child labor protections. The trend reflects a coordinated multi-industry push to expand employer access to low-wage labor and weaken state child labor laws in ways that contradict federal protections, in pursuit of longer-term industry-backed goals to rewrite federal child labor laws and other worker protections for the whole country. Children of families in poverty, and especially Black, brown, and immigrant youth, stand to suffer the most harm from such changes.

The Supreme Court wrestles with questions over the Navajo Nation’s water rights (Becky Sullivan, NPR)

A course meant to inspire more Black students to take AP classes sparked a culture war instead (Michelle Garcia, NBC News)

No, my Japanese American parents were not ‘interned’ during WWII. They were incarcerated (Teresa Watanabe, LA Times)

What Does Your DEI Plan Offer People With Disabilities? (Vincenzo Piscopo, Forbes)

If there are any attorneys or law students who identify as Black, Native Americans, or Pacific Islanders who are interested in nonprofit corporate and tax-exemption laws and who’d like to pursue this area of practice, I’m committing one hour each week to being a resource. Please contact me if I can be of service. 🙏
